Summer is Winding Down

 It won't be long before the butterflies will be heading south or where ever it is that they go.  I have enjoyed seeing them around my house this year.  I don't know what this flowering vine is that is growing around this Sycamore Tree.  The butterflies were enjoying a feast of sweet nectar from it.  I am not ready for summer to end.  I am ready for the high temps and humidity to end though.  We are currently in a dry spell with hot days and cool nights.  The day is getting shorter and the night is getting longer.  I prefer the long days with the sun being out. 

Fall is right around the corner.  The leaves are turning their fall colors.  It's been really dry the past few weeks so I'm worried that the leaves will not be at a beautiful peak color this year.  Getting to see all four seasons change is one of the many benefits of living in Wild and Wonderful West Virginia.

Red Bull

I'm please to announce the arrival of this little guy that lives on one of my neighbor's farms!  He was born about 2 weeks ago and I've been trying to get a picture of him since then.  I finally got a few good ones today.  A friend helped me to name him Red Bull!  I like it!  No, he's not mine and he's not mine to name, but I do like to name the different animals that I see around here.  I'm a little crazy that way!  I'm sure the neighbor's already know that I am a little nutty.  lol

The New Kids

I noticed earlier in the summer that there are some new kids around here and I just love seeing them when I drive by.  This particular farm has always had cows.  I don't know why they traded the cows for donkeys, but they are so cute!

I have been wanting to get pictures of them since I first seen them.  I finally had my chance and I stopped my truck in the middle of the road and took some pictures of these beautiful creatures.

I do not know their names, but I call them Shrek and Fionna!  I also don't know if they are both male or both female or one of each.  They don't tend to stay very close to the road like the cows did.

I have not heard them make their ever popular donkey sound.  I look forward to seeing them as I drive by this farm from time to time.

Wild Horses at Corolla, North Carolina ~ Part 1

 After exploring around the Currituck Beach Lighthouse we drove on the beach at Corolla, North Carolina to try to see if we could find any of the wild horses known to that area.  I was so excited when we seen our first herd of the wild Spanish Mustang horses. 

 We had read some information that you are supposed to stay 50 feet from them and you are not allowed to feed them.  I watched a video in prep for this post that said that if you feed them apples and carrots it could kill them so don't feed the wild horses!  They are doing very well on their own as you can tell from the pictures I took of them.  They are very healthy looking horses.

I will have to say that this area of the Outer Banks is my favorite area to explore.  I loved driving on the beach.  I loved seeing the wild horses.  I loved the gentle waves.  I loved that it wasn't hard to walk on this beach!  It was the best in my opinion.

Guess what I seen!

It's official! We have a beaver in the creek! I seen it twice the other day as we were riding around in the hay field. I hope that beaver gets to work on chopping down all of those trees on the other side of the creek or it will have to go! lol  

I didn't get a picture of the beaver, but I did get a picture of the soft shell turtle swimming in the creek that same day. Here's a list of all of the different critters that most people don't usually see that I've seen on our property over the past 18 years: deer, bear, turkey, mink, soft shell turtles, box turtles, woodcock, beaver, crane, skunk family, raccoon family, racer black snakes, copperhead snakes, green snakes, squirrels and rabbits.

Oh Deer!!!

 It has been killing me not having a camera to take a picture of this herd of deer that gather in our field every evening.  Friday evening I went to get pizza and knew they would be there ready and waiting for me to take a few pictures of them.  I had my camera ready and my window down when I seen one doe run across the road in front of me to go to the field.  She in turn made the ones in the upper right hand side to run with her but I still managed to get a few pictures of them anyway. 

 We have been seeing these two big bucks in our field lately.  I love seeing them.  Other people who drive by and see them will stop also to take a look at them.  It is hunting season right now and I am really hoping that no one gets these two bucks because I enjoy seeing them.

 I know the quality of these pictures isn't that great, but it was getting dark out and I was pretty far away from them and had to use my zoom.  You can however tell how big their antlers are and how many of them that gather there which is why I went ahead and put these up.

I really do love living in the woods!  Growing up in the city I never seen deer around our house ever.  When we first moved to our farm it was a novelty for me to get to go for a car ride in the evenings to see the fields upon fields of deer that are out here.

For The Boston Lady

I took this picture of a stained glass Boston Terrier at Tamarack, WV few months ago, but haven't posted it until today.  I'm really behind on reading all of my friends blogs that I didn't know her daughter, the Maven, had to have surgery.  So I'd like to dedicate this post to The Boston Lady and her daughter, the Maven, since they love Boston Terriers.  I pray that she will have a speedy and full recovery.  I'm also sure that they would appreciate any and all prayers for a speedy recovery for the Maven.

I love looking at the cows nearby our house.  This one was an unusual looking color to me.  It was the color of a donkey!  I thought she was pretty.  I could tell she was watching me take her picture.  I think she striked a pose.

Wild Coyote Spotting

Nah, it's just Two. She looks like a wild coyote the way she is eating her dog food though! My dogs crack me up!

In my Yard!

I watched these two in my backyard before going outside the front door to try to sneak a picture of them. It was a buck with a baby fawn. No mother to be seen. They started walking toward the garage where I feed the girls. I think they were looking for food. They didn't find any this time, but who knows how often they have found a little something to nibble on.

The Visitor

This is my mom's dog who stayed with us along with my mom while their electric was off last week. My dog Two didn't particularly care for Molly Mae being here so we had to keep the girls separated. Jazz didn't mind the visiting dog but we still kept them apart. We played musical dogs all week. When Molly Mae was outside my girls were either in the house or in the garage. When my girls were outside Molly Mae was in the garage. We put a fan in there, but it still was hot.
Molly Mae is a very big dog compared to my girls. She would jump up and look inside the window by our door so we moved the rocking chairs to keep her from doing that. I can't tell you how many times we had to fill up the dogs water bowls that we had scattered around for them to drink. We even brought out a kiddie pool and put some water in it for them. It quickly evaporated with the 108 degree temps we had all week. Molly Mae is an inside dog. She got to enjoy running free for a few days on our farm. It was good exercise for her. She even tried to chase a rabbit, but wasn't quick enough to catch it! I think she had a great time over all, but she was happy when she got home.

Field of Horses

While we were at Canaan Valley on vacation we drove around taking in all of the scenery of the area. There is one road that has a field of horses. It is a beautiful sight to see.

My pictures just don't do them justice. It was later in the evening which is why my pictures are dark.

We have the black and white horses.

And the classic dalmatian horse! I can see it riding with the firefighters on the firetruck can't you! lol Isn't this horse the most unique looking horse you've ever seen? You've gotta love it!

Baby Fawn

Thursday evening we went for a ride. We were thrilled to get to see a baby fawn that wasn't much over a day old. I'm so glad I had my camera so I could share this with you. Is it just me or is blogger messing with others? I uploaded these pictures all at once in the order that I wanted them to be and yet it just puts them where it wants to put them.


The baby fawn was going to lay down to hide from us as we were watching it.

Not the best picture but it shows just how wobbly this little baby was while it tried to walk.

You can see just how fluffy the little thing was also in this picture.


In the 7 years that we have been riding the trails out here this is only the second baby fawn that we have came upon. This one is by far the youngest one we've seen. I did see a baby fawn in the road a few years back. I stayed there until the little one got off the road and into the safety of the woods so it wouldn't get hit by a car.

Girls on Patrol

Hey girls! What's going on there? Two: Go away! We are on patrol! Jazz: Look up there! We have something trapped and we aren't going to let it come back down! bol

Me: Girls! Leave that baby squirrel alone! It's just a baby!
Squirrel: Please let me go! I'm just a baby!

Even my Little Man had to check things out!

Girls: Be very, very still. Maybe it will think we left and it will come down.

Jazz: I'm a rock star at trapping wild critters!
Two: Be quite Jazz! You know Mom don't like us doing this!

Two: Mom please leave us alone! We are having fun! We have that squirrel trapped and we are going to get it!

Me: Girls! Leave it alone! Remember what happened last year! Jazz had to get 2 stitches over your patrols!

Jazz: It was worth it!

Squirrel: Please woman! Get your dogs out of here!
